PRESS RELEASE

What You Need to Know about
IL TROVATORE at Lyric Opera of Chicago

Seven performances Nov. 17 - Dec. 9
CHICAGO (11/1/2018) – A mother’s fateful mistake has deadly consequences in this riveting opera by Giuseppe Verdi. Hearts are broken, terrible secrets and hidden identities revealed, and loyalties questioned.

  • A highly popular, classic 19th-century Italian opera -- great for first-timers and experienced opera-goers alike. For this hot-blooded tale of love, jealousy, and retribution, Verdi created music that truly bursts with excitement.
  • Vividly drawn characters will enthrall you: bold and courageous Manrico (the troubadour of the title), his beloved lady Leonora, the fiery Count di Luna who covets Leonora, and the wild, obsessed Azucena, whose terrible secret is central to the story.
  • A terrific international cast of new and returning artists: Tamara Wilson (Lyric debut) is Leonora, Jamie Barton is Azucena, Russell Thomas is Azucena’s son Manrico (or is he?), Artur Ruciński (Lyric debut) is the dastardly Count di Luna, and Roberto Tagliavini (Lyric debut) is Ferrando, who starts the opera by telling scary tales about the count’s family.
  • Each artist has thrilling music to sing: Leonora’s soaringly romantic "Tacea la notte," Azucena’s mesmerizing "Stride la vampa," Manrico’s hair-raising call to arms – these are just a few of the fabulous highlights that make Il trovatore a feast of sumptuous vocalism.
  • Conductor Marco Armiliato and the Lyric Opera Orchestra bring terrific collective experience to the thrilling blood-and-thunder score.
  • The Lyric Opera Chorus, prepared by chorus master Michael Black, gets to let loose on one of the most famous pieces of music, the hearty and instantly recognizable "Anvil Chorus" that opens Act Two, while shirtless actors let loose with hefty hammers on anvils.
  • The visually powerful production is set in the smoldering atmosphere of darkly mysterious 15th-century Spain, inspired by the evocative paintings of the Spanish artist Francesco Goya.
  • Sir David McVicar is the original director of this coproduction of Lyric Opera of Chicago, The Metropolitan Opera, and the San Francisco Opera Association. Roy Rallo (Lyric debut) directs the revival, with set designs by Charles Edwards, costume designs by Brigitte Reiffenstuel, original lighting design by Jennifer Tipton, and revival lighting design by Chris Maravich.
  • See it if you like: Game of Thrones, passionate music and melodrama, solo and choral singing that blows you away. And anvils!
  • Sung in Italian with projected English translations above the stage
